Race History: First run in 1855, 6 years before the first running of the Melbourne Cup. The original distance was the classic 12 furlongs (approx. 2400m) until 1972 when it was thought that the race would be safer with an extra 100m between the start and the first turn. It is the most prestigious and richest 3 year old staying race in the Australian racing calender. It is also part of what is often the biggest attendance day of the Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival with many racegoers turning out in the traditional Morning dress for the men, black and white for the ladies. The official flower of the day is a Blue Cornflower. Some very special horses have won this race over the years with many going on to win more major races.

The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 2500m start is situated just before the first turn in front of the grandstand in the home straight. An inside barrier is a slight advantage. It is difficult to lead all the way due to the distance involved.
