History: Originally the Williamstown Cup and run at Caulfield, the race dates back to 1888, re-named the Sandown Cup when moved to Sandown raceourse in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It is ideal to give horses which missed a spot in the top end races of the Spring Racing Carnival a chance of glory at the staying distance. Gunsynd won in 1971 and was still winning races in 1973 when he was named Australian Champion Racehorse. Zipping won 4 years running in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010, in 2011 the Sandown Classic became the Zipping Classic. In 2010 a new 3200m handicap event named the Sandown Cup was introduced to be run on the same day, also on the card is the Eclipse Stakes and the Sandown Guineas.
Past Champion Winners: Light Fingers (1966) Gunsynd (1971 and in 1972 the Futurity, the Doncaster, Caulfield Cup & Cox Plate)

Lead Up Races: look for horses with good runs in any of the Classic distance races in the Spring Carnival or who have just failed to meet the entry requirements for the Melbourne Cup. Many runners come through the Moonee Valley Cup or the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, in 2010 Zipping won his 4th Sandown Classic after running 4th in the Melbourne Cup.
Support Races: Sandown Guineas, Sandown Cup, Eclipse Stakes.
Track Bias, Barriers: The race starts in the home straight and the rail is usually True at this meeting, barriers are of little importance due to the distance involved.
Weight & Statistics: Weights vary according to the WFA Scale with younger and older males and females all winning. Look for WFA performers or handicappers with good performance at the distance.
