History: Originally the Rawson Stakes and then the Segenhoe Stakes, the Ranvet began in 1903 as a Quality Race up to 1979 attaining Group1 Status in 1980. Along with the Coolmore it is the first Group1 race at Rosehill since the previous August. Many horses come into this race after a win or place in the Chipping Norton - like Bernborough the most popular racehorse in Australia following this route and going on to win 15 consecutive races in 1946. Might and Power (having won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in 1997) came 2nd to Gold Guru in 1998 and went on to win the Queen Elizabeth, Cox Plate & Doomben Cup in the same year. It has become an important form guide with horses going on to success in other major races. Eight horses have won the race in 2 consecutive years, Tie The Knot almost won 3 times, was relegated to 2nd in 1999 on protest but won it 2000 & 2001.
Past Winners: Bernborough (1946 Newmarket & Doomben Cup), Gunsynd (1971 & 1973 Epsom, Toorak, George Adams & Queen Elizabeth, Blamey 1973), Better Loosen up (1990 Feehan, MacKinnon & Cox Plate).
Lead up Form: Chipping Norton Stakes
Time: Track record at the Rosehill 2000m is 1:59.99
The Track: The 2000m start is in a chute on the left of the course and gives all horses a chance to take a position before the first of 3 turns. On this fairly tight turning track leading or on pace can be an advantage. Backmarkers have to start their runs before they have finished the final turn which sends them wide and makes the dash up the short final straight tough.
Track Bias, Barriers: Most winners come from inside barrier 11 racing on pace or leading.
Weight Statistics: Winners can be male female young or old but genuine WFA horses do well and the top weights often win.
Associated Races: Coolmore Classic | Doomben Cup | Cox Plate | Mackinnon Stakes.
