Randwick Barriers Starting Positions:
1000, 1100m & 1200m metre starts: Barrier stalls are located in an angled chute at the back of the course proper. There is a straight run to the home turn, inside barriers have a slight advantage.
1400m: Starts in a chute off the back of the course, angled run to the first corner then a straight run to the home turn. Inside barriers have a slight advantage.
1600m: Located in a short chute off the back of the course. Straight run of 650m until the first turn, inside barriers are a slight advantage.
1800m: Begins on the course proper on the left hand side of the track. Barriers are of little importance.
2000m: Located on the turn just out of the home straight. Runners are on a curve until they reach the back stretch of the course. Fields are restricted, inside barriers are a distinct advantage, particularly when the rail is out.
2400m: Barriers are positioned in front of the grandstand in the home straight. Barriers are of little importance.
3200m: Only one race over this distance every year, the Sydney Cup. In recent years winners have started from inside barrier 9.
Circumference is 2213 metres, length of the home straight is 410 metres. A wide, sweeping track with a rise from the 300m mark to the winning post in the home straight. Horses race in a clockwise direction.
Characteristics: there are four turns at Randwick and, while it is a large course where most runners should have their chance, it is a track that favours on pace runners - particularly when the ground is rain affected during the winter months.
