History: First run at the Derby distance of 12 furlongs (2400m) but was reduced to a mile (1600m) in 1951, where it has remained until now with minor adjustments. It was first run in 1887 and is the Major Race of the 3 day Summer Carnival. Strangely it was won by Carbine in 1894 which was a really good effort at the age of 9 and already at stud, but in fact there were 2 Carbines. The W.A. Carbine also won the West Australian Derby 1894. Not many people know that. Northerly is probably the best known winner of the 2000 Railway at the start of his successful career. Many interstate trainers are starting to take horses to Perth for the Summer Carnival because of the prize money on offer and as this trend continues the racing will get even more exciting.
Past Champion Winners: Sniper’s Bullet (2009), Northerly (2000), Better Loosen Up (1989).
Best lead-up form: The best of the local talent will find themselves up against some pretty nifty visitors from the Eastern States, especially those not at the absolute end of a strong spring preparation.
Time: track record at the Ascot 1600m is 1:33.73 Marwong (Railway Stakes 1988)
Supporting Races: Ark Stakes, Tattersall’s Cup, Carbine Club Stakes.
The Track: The 1600m start is in a chute off the back straight with a short run to the first corneronce into the 2nd straight horses will have the chance to position themselves for the last and tightest of the corners with a short run in the final straight to the winning post.
Weights & Statistics: Winners are generally from 55kg down to bottom weights except for the 2009 winner Sniper’s Bullet which carried 56.5kg the heaviest impost since we started recording in kilos in 1972.
