Australia's Track Rating System:

Track conditions can have a significant impact on the way a track races and horses can be favoured or disadvantaged depending on the track bias of the day. Track ratings, rail position and penetrometer information can be a valuable tool for assessing the likely pattern of racing.

Before racing commences, the track is assessed in two ways; by racetrack officials walking the track and by penetrometer readings which measure the firmness of the soil at various points around the course. This information is then used to arrive at an average overall rating for the track. Trainers are then given the opportunity to run or scratch their horses based on the early track rating.

The rating can change throughout the day depending on weather conditions. When the weather is fine and warm, the tracks are usually prepared to be Dead in the morning with an upgrade to Good expected later in the day.

Australian Racing Report has the current track conditions & scratchings for all Australian metro racecourses updated on raceday morning, navigate to the course under
Racetracks for more information.

Australian Track Ratings:

Fast (1) - rarely seen at the city tracks, the firmest rating and considered unsuitable for many horses as it increases the chances of injury.
Good (2 or 3) - when the weather is fine & sunny most tracks in Australia will be rated Good 3.
Dead (4 or 5) - the track has a little bit of give but not enough to be considered a wet track. Suitable for most horses.
Slow (6 or 7) - after a reasonable amount of rain the track is often rated Slow. The ground will chop out but be better than Heavy. Some runners excel on rain affected tracks, others prefer firmer going.
Heavy (8, 9 or 10) - when there has been significant rain, this is the slowest track rating in Australia. Look for runners with previous success on wet tracks, or those with wet track horses in their pedigree.
