History: The race was first won in 1866 by Bylong with Tim Whifler 3rd. The following year Tim Whifler won and went on to win the Melbourne Cup. In 1868 the winner of the 1866 Melbourne Cup, The Barb, won with Tim Whifler 2nd and Bylong 3rd. Initially run as a 2 mile race, the distance has ranged from 12 furlongs (2400m) to13 furlongs (2600m) and since 2001 the distance has been 2400m. The winners and place getters of the Metropolitan often do well in the Melbourne Spring Carnival and it can often be a good lead up form race for the Caulfield Cup.

Lead-Up Races: Kingston Town Stakes & Colin Stephen Quality.
Supporting Races: Epsom Handicap, Spring Champion Stakes, Flight Stakes.
The Track: Randwick is a large course with four sweeping turns. Generally fair, but tends to favour the on pace runners when the ground is rain affected.
Track Bias, Barriers: At this distance barrier draw is not particularly important, should be possible to make ground unless the ground is wet. Look for handicappers with a good record at this track, fast final sectional times can be a helpful guide.
Weight, Statistics: Some higher weighted horses have pulled this race off but most winners come from the lighter end of the weights carrying between 50kgs and 54.5kgs.
