History: First run in 1899 over a mile but increased to 9 furlongs (1800m) until 1970. 1971 to 1979 it was 1600m and since run over 1400m. The Memsie has become a significant race as a lead up to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Heroic, Phar Lap, Ajax and Sunline are among those who have gone on to win the Cox Plate in the same year, while Comic Court won the Melbourne Cup, Rising Fast won the Caulfield Cup & Cox Plate and Makybe Diva won the Cox Plate and her 3rd Melbourne Cup in 2005. Often won by a horse which has seen success in the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup in the previous spring.
Past Champion Winners: Heroic (1925 & 1926), Phar Lap (1931), Ajax (1938, 1939 & 1940), Comic Court (1949 & 1950), Rising Fast (1954), Sunline (2000), Makybe Diva (2005), So You Think (2010).
Lead Up Form: The 1400m Liston can give an indication for this race but the Memsie heralds in the start of the the Spring and its winners often do very well during the Carnival. Regarded as one of the best lead-up race for the Manikato. Memsie stakes / Manikato double won by Dane Ripper ’98 and Sunline 2000, with Sunline going on to win the Cox Plate in the same year.
Time: Track record for the 1400m at Caulfield is 1:21.20 (Exceed & Excell)
Track Bias, Barriers: The race starts in a short chute at the back of the track which leads straight into a corner. An inside draw can be an advantage particularly as the rail is usually out a long way for this meeting favouring those on pace.
Weight & Statistics: W.F.A. conditions mean the males carry heavier weights up to 59kg, with females carrying around 2kgs less. Look for genuine WFA performers.
Associated Races: Toorak Hcp | Makybe Diva Stakes | Caulfield Cup | Melbourne Cup.
