Race History: Originally The Hotham Handicap first run in 1869 as a 1½ mile (2400m) but since 1972 is run over 2500m.It has been known by various names and was the Saab Quality up until 2009 when renamed The Lexus. While it is a excellent race in its own right it also is the last chance for horses trying to get a spot in the Melbourne Cup field who need to get a weight penalty to do it. Shocking won the double in 2009 while Maluckyday 2010 and Niwot 2011 qualified and ran in the Cup but just missed the big Prize..

Weight Statistics: A few horses over 56k have won this race but the majority of winners come from lighter weighted horses from 50kgs to 55kgs. This is probably because horses who are outside the weight ballot for the Melbourne Cup get an automatic entry for a win in this race. This is how Shocking carried 51kgs, Brew carried 49 and Think Big carried 53kgs winning in 1974 but 58.5kgs in1975
Track Bias: no significant track bias and all horses have an even chance with the Flemington straight to finish off.
