History: The race was first run in 1861 as the A.J.C. Randwick Derby Stakes, referred to as the Australian Derby since the merger of the Australian Jockey Club and Sydney Turf Club in 2011. The first winner was Kyogle. Australasia’s famous Phar Lap won the race in 1929 (his 3rd career win) after winning the Rosehill Guineas and then won the Craven Plate, the V.R.C. Derby and ran 3rd in the 1929 Melbourne Cup. In 1930 Phar Lap went on to blitz his rivals with a staggering number of wins including the Cox Plate & the Melbourne Cup. Tulloch was another wonder horse who won the Rosehill Guineas and then the A.J.C. Derby and in the same year won the Qld Derby, the V.R.C. Derby, the Caulfield Guineas & the Caulfield Cup. The race has been a favourite for Australia’s best known trainer of recent times Bart Cummings who has trained the winner 5 times.
AJC (Australian) Derby Winners: The Barb (1866 Mares Produce & Melbourne Cup), Robinson Crusoe (1876 also Mares Produce, Sires Produce & Champagne stakes), Phar Lap (1929), Peter Pan (1932 also Melbourne Stakes & Melbourne Cup), Tulloch (1957), Kingston Town (1980 also Qld Derby, Sydney Cup & Cox Plate), Mahogany (1994).

Time: track record at the Randwick 2400m is 2:27.42 Lanolin
The Track: Randwick is a large course with four sweeping turns. Generally fair, but tends to favour on pace runners when the ground is rain affected. Barriers are of little importance due to the distance involved.
Weight Statistics: Set weights conditions means all the males will carry 56.5kg and dominate this event, last filly to win Shamrocker 2011.
